Mark was a friend of mine from the time we were in the second grade, when my family first moved to Oak Forest. Mark lived on Althea and my family lived one street over on Wakefield. We went to Stevens Elementary a few blocks away. We knew each other all through school. We used to hang out our senior year at Waltrip with a few other friends. We used to go to the Church dances on Friday nights, where some great local groups played. It was at one of those dances, where I met my wife Renee’, who was a sophomore at Waltrip. I remember riding in Mark’s “hot” Mustang Fastback. We continued to hang out quite a bit when I came home on weekends, while going to Texas A&M. Mark was always fun and had a great sense of humor that I enjoyed. We lost track of each other for a few years. I ran into him once at MD Anderson in 2004, when he told me he was undergoing treatment for Kidney Cancer. I was in for treatment for a Prostate Cancer for the second time. Knowing the prospects for Kidney Cancer though, I thought at the time that he probably didn’t have long.  Fortunately I was very wrong. I have followed him since, and he has been a true hero. I cannot say enough good about MD Anderson, and they obviously did a great job treating Mark. They have undoubtedly learned immensely from Mark’s experience and response to the treatment, which will help others in the future. But Mark’s strength and positive attitude have been miraculous and more than inspirational through the endless years of treatment. The world, his family, and friends have been blessed with the extra years Mark was given to be here and inspire us.  I will always smile and remember my friend Mark Ideus.
